◎简　　介　

　　一个叫做科顿·马库斯的男人，他有自己的妻子和孩子需要抚养。所以，生活对于他的意义就是“赚钱”。虽然自己的父母很小的时候就给马库斯灌输宗教信仰，并让他成为了一个神职人员，但是马库斯从内心中从来就没有相信过上帝的存在，从来就不相信什么宗教之类的东西。

　　马库斯工作的一部分是为周围村庄的人布道，用宗教的力量消除他们的痛苦，而另一个工作的主题，则是为周边地区的人们“驱魔”。这次，马库斯得到了一个偏僻山村的一户村民的邀请，要为一户人家的女儿驱魔。这是马库斯心中的最后一次“宗教活动”。完成这次驱魔之后，马库斯准备不再做神职工作，重新回到世俗世界里，做一个普通人。因为只有回到现实世界里，马库斯才能觉得自己是一个人。

　　这是最后一次，所以马库斯找来了一个电影摄制队跟着他，为他拍摄一部关于驱魔的纪录片。不消说，马库斯希望这个纪录片能卖出一个好价钱。当他来到这个村庄的时候，他发现事情并非是他所熟悉的驱魔。周边的村民都对他有着强烈的敌意。而在驱魔的过程中，发生了许多无法解释的事情－－被恶魔附体的人的自残、没有重力地在墙上行走等等。驱魔完成之后，马库斯开始学习相信上帝的存在。
