　　1974年秋天的一个漆黑、动҉乱҉的夜晚，笛福（Defeo）家庭——罗一世、他的妻子路易斯、他们的儿子罗二世、马克、约翰和女儿道恩、艾丽森——在纽约的艾米提威镇一所由荷兰殖民者留下的三层楼的房子里，安静祥和地睡着。霎时间，罗二世用一把高性能的来复枪谋杀了正在酣睡中的全家，沉默从此被打破。
　　凶恶的犯罪被绳之于法后，笛福把犯罪的事实归咎于这所房子被邪恶附着的。他说有一个恶魔指使并操控他进行这次大屠杀。但是没人相信他，即使他在审判中发誓，陪审团也不买他的帐。检察官坚决认为这年轻的男人只是为了骗取高额的保险金，最终法官以六项一级谋杀的罪名判处他150年的监禁。
　　时间快速推移到了1975年的12月，路兹夫妇——乔治和凯西购下了这所房子，并把他们家搬了进来。这对夫妇称道，从他们搬进来的那天起，他们经常能听到一些似乎没有声源的怪声音。已经锁上了的门窗会莫名其妙地开开关关。乔治还说，无论在房子的那一个角落，都有一个冷酷的管乐队跟踪着他。于是，他们不得不请一位牧师来驱除它，然而一种由肉体爆发出的声音告诉牧师“滚出去。”
　　牧师走后，事情反而变得更糟糕。奇怪的声音变得更为恐怖；透过窗子可以看见魔鬼就在窗外；绿色的烂泥从墙壁和天花板上渗出。乔治自称自己已被某样东西所占有。奇怪的幽灵和气味无处不在，家里最小的孩子似乎在和一只看不见的邪恶的猪讲话。于是，路兹家庭决定最后留在这所房子28天后就搬家。可是……
